McGee: How I'll play Gulfstream on Saturday, Feb. 7
I’m going to start this 13-race marathon by tying together a couple of singles in the first pick three of the day: TUMMINIA (2) as the most likely winner and favorite in race 1 and NUN THE LESS (1), a fresh returnee who gets Jose Lezcano and might well get a nice ground-saving trip before capitalizing on a torrid pace in race 3.
Here’s the first ticket:
Race 1: 2
Race 2: 3, 5, 6, 7, 8
Race 3: 1
Race 4
I’m probably going to pass, although I’d want no part of GREAT STUFF (7) in a win slot as the favorite (he’s 3-1 on the morning line). Too many other good ones to choose from.
Race 5
Won’t BOLD THUNDER (1) and EL BOTAS (5) cancel each other out? Of course, it doesn’t always work out that way when there are two major speeds like them, but it sure seems like things could set up for GREEN MASK (3), BYE BYE BERNIE (6), or PRUDHOE BAY (7). I’ll tie up those three in exactas and trifectas.
Race 6
THE SON WIND (8) is one of those non-sexy Calder-type picks that invariably offer value when facing horses from the fashionable New York stables (Chad Brown, Todd Pletcher, et al). He looks like the outside speed and should have every opportunity to run his race.
Race 8
TRIPLE CHARM (6) could quickly become a stakes player this year for Christophe Clement. I’ll climb on board early in this 3x allowance. Keying every which way.
Race 10
Going to play scattershot pick fours relying on either of the rail-drawn Pletcher horses, MSHAWISH or CONSTITUTION, to win their respective races; both should get great trips and are sitting on explosive efforts.
Here’s the ticket:
Race 10: 2, 3, 6, 8, 9, 12
Race 11: 3, 5, 7, 8, 10
Race 12: A: 1 … B: 3, 5
Race 13: A: 1 … B: 2, 3, 4
50-cent ticket (A/B) = $45
50-cent ticket (B/A) = $30
$1 ticket (A/A) = $30
