McGee: How I'd play Keeneland on Sunday, April 24
The back end of this nine-race Sunday program looks pretty chalky, with one of the uber-trainers (Shug, Todd, Kiaran) most likely to win the race 7 feature and Todd likely to win the finale with KISMET’S HEELS. But I do believe there’s a way to leverage an early sequence into a decent score, so here we go.
In race 3, isn’t the “Brad Cox off” angle worth playing against FLATTER ME BIG, who got an easy rail lead on the April 8 opening-day card, a day that slanted toward rail speed? The uncoupled Joe Sharp duo of STREET MOXIE and RARE ART should provide sufficient coverage assuming the favorite doesn’t run back to that last one.
In race 4, there’s another good go-against horse in MOUNTAIN CRY, who’s “N.P. Zito off” after repeated tries to get through his maiden condition. Spreading with HARD LABOR, DUKE OF DENVER, and BANKER’S HOLIDAY should keep us live.
In race 5, the anchor leg, it sure seems like the Ramseys have ‘em over a barrel with WALKING THE KITTEN, who not only brings a class edge to the proceedings but also has had two solid preps at Fair Grounds and now draws favorably on the hedge with Julien Leparoux, who should be able to work out a winning trip.
Here’s the play:
R3 – 2, 3
R4 – 3, 5, 7
R5 – 2
$5 ticket = $30
