McGee: How I'd play Keeneland on Sunday, April 10
I found the Sunday card at Keeneland to be fairly difficult, and my most confident plays probably will be rather chalky, such as the card-starters STREET CHIEF in Race 1 and either of the Wesley Ward fillies (SPELLKER and RED LODGE) in Race 2. So, I’d prefer to wait until a bit later in the day to really step in, and I’ll do so by formatting a late pick four (races 6-9) that uses one key single and gives sufficient spread so as to yield blow-it-up potential.
The single comes in race 7 with FOR YU MICHELLE, who figures to get a terrific stalking trip from her outside post with the underrated Brian Hernandez Jr. up for Merrill Scherer. The filly goes from turf to dirt and might well be showing stretch punch on this turnback while well spotted for the $20,000 tag.
We’ll surround her with a mix of logicals and bombs. Here are the numbers:
R6 – 1, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12
R7 – 12
R8 – 1, 5, 8, 10
R9 – 3, 5, 7
50-cent ticket = $42
