Gulfstream Park analysis for Sunday, April 19, 2020 BEST BET: Put Position (7th race) First Race  1. Books 2. Myfirstexwife 3. Dinner At Five An 11-race Sunday card highlighting a force-out of the Rainbow 6 (races 6-11, post 3:23 ET) is expected to be run under mostly sunny skies and amid a high temp of 87. The preliminaries start with the 12:55 ET opener, and at the risk of overlooking a “good thing” firster such as Feather's Secret or Ella's Island, we'll nod in the direction of more experienced 3yo fillies. Giving the second-timer BOOKS a big chance, given the immediate drop in class and her favorable open-air outside-box draw; slow start did her no favors when caboosing a short field in her debut 6 Sundays ago. MYFIRSTEXWIFE and DINNER AT FIVE both were 2nd at this same level in their latest and are obvious threats, while CAMELLIA GAL, owned by Robert Schaedle of Honor Glide fame, is a difficult gauge on this severe cutback from a two-turn mile. :: To stay up to date, follow us on: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter Second Race  1. Memorize 2. Nowitna River 3. Suz This bottom-level open claimer for filly-mare sprinters might well distill into a replay of the April 2 race in which MEMORIZE led throughout at 6-1 when making her first start under the Negrete banner; looking for the 7-pound bug to push the right buttons when engaging early with Suz. NOWITNA RIVER was sent here by new owner Bob Bone in view of scarce other opportunities; former Finger Lakes denizen is a tricky gauge when cutting back from 7 furlongs. SUZ was just okay behind the top pick when 2-1 in her first start off the Schettino claim; pretty much forced to gun early from her rail slot. Third Race  1. Mighty Fast 2. Strong Ending 3. Consilium A best-yet effort from MIGHTY FAST might be enough for him to escape these lower maiden ranks as he stretches out to what figures to be a suitable distance; typically cagey Saez guidance clearly would help. STRONG ENDING goes turf-to-dirt while taking another drop of quiet desperation; yet to show any kind of zip, but that could change given the surface switch and lighter opposition. CONSILIUM already has racked up three 2nds and looks fairly reliable; perhaps best used as a vertical “under.” Fourth Race  1. Fast Venezuela 2. Princess Ulele 3. Don't Get Khozy The overt “every-other” pattern for FAST VENEZUELA suggests she'll be ready to blaze away from her rail slot, especially given the welcome return to these $12.5k ranks; 5-pound bug boy surely will have her in full flight from the opening bell. PRINCESS ULELE comes well-drawn in the outer box while getting cut in half by Fawkes; stalks the early goers until it's time to move along. DON'T GET KHOZY tends to dig a hole for herself early but does have a mild kick. Fifth Race  1. Eternal Peace 2. Come Storming 3. Rearrange It's that time of year when 3yos first start to mix in with their elders, and conventional wisdom is that the older horses have an edge, all other things being equal (and hence the discrepancy in weight assignments). We'll follow that lead here when siding with a trio of 4yo fillies, starting with the blue-blooded ETERNAL PEACE, who gets a fresh start for a HOF trainer (Attfield) whose charges tend to come alive in springtime; serious Payson drills appear to have her on the razor's edge. COME STORMING, by coincidence, contested the same salty GP turf race in March 2019 as the top pick; she, too, has upside aplenty for a trainer (Bush) who does outstanding work with the grassers. REARRANGE had a very useful start 3 Sundays ago for an outfit (Oliver) that's far more dangerous than the 2020 stats suggest. Sixth Race  1. Bareeqa 2. Codrington 3. Scatnap Mere millions are on the line for the next few hours as Race 6 starts off the 20-cent Rainbow 6, which had more than $1M in the carryover jackpot when action began Friday. Would be a bit more wary of BAREEQA if it weren't for the excellent stats Gargan shows with horses returning from layoffs of 61-180 days (17-for-65, .26 wins, $2.44 ROI); Boynton work slate of recent weeks confirms her readiness as the obvious one to beat following that terrific Presidents Day run. CODRINGTON drops below the $35k purchase price when exiting a fairly rugged 1x alw for Dobles and the Imaginary folks; real danger at this level. SCATNAP ran big in the same Fla. Derby Day race as Codrington; 7yo mare may've needed it after the 10-week layoff; out-front threat with that one under her. Seventh Race  1. Put Position 2. Brookes All Mine 3. Tiz Possible Dear Not only is PUT POSITION going turf-to-dirt while favorably drawn in the outside post, but the Illinois-bred mare faces much lighter opposition after getting fit again; return to the main track will allow her to revert to her preferred stalk-and-pounce style while improving on her 7-for-11 main-track record as the day's best. BROOKES ALL MINE seems the only viable alternative to the top pick, having been very competitive at this open $8k level for several months now, regardless of who has led her over; looms the one to catch from the quarter pole home. Seems like TIZ POSSIBLE DEAR, GRACE'S DRAMA, and KINDHEARTED KOTA can only hope for minor shares. Eighth Race  1. No Word 2. Pleasecallmeback 3. Mystic Lancelot This 3yo-only 1x turf mile is one of the deeper races of the day, although it's never a surprise when the Pletcher powerhouse figures prominently like it does here. Giving the TAP comebacker NO WORD the slight edge in what surely will be a deep-spread strategy for many serious Rainbow players; Wertheimer homebred tipped his hand early, winning a Saratoga turf route at first asking before going favored in the G3 Pilgrim; been working right along in Delray, as you'd expect. PLEASECALLMEBACK was no threat in his Fla. Derby Day comeback, but he faced the absolute best of the division (Decorated Invader et al) when badly needing one; stark improvement here wouldn't be surprising. MYSTIC LANCELOT, the “other Todd,” has been something of a disappointment, but he is tactically sound and is eligible to jump up with a best-ever on this slight turn-back. Ninth Race  1. Trappezoid 2. Yes I See 3. Gran Greyfrost All of a sudden TRAPPEZOID is back in the form he flashed as a young steed in his early Ky. days, launching big stretch runs to win off by himself. First start of the spring-summer meet finds him on what amounts to a subtle class raise, albeit not an insurmountable one if he can just keep doing what he did to end the championship meet. YES I SEE gives up a lot of real estate early before coming alive; outer post can afford him a smooth journey. GRAN GREYFROST has been off 3 months since drubbing much easier N3L types, but very much worth noting the Barboza stats with such layoff types (14-for-44, .32 win pct. $1.94 ROI). Tenth Race  1. Seranitsa 2. Bering Strait 3. Temple City Terror Here's another nearly inscrutable 1x alw for turf milers, this one with an overfilled lineup comprised mostly of 4yo fillies. Hereby nominating Brendan Walsh the most likely to take down the top prize here, with SERANITSA the most able of his uncoupled duo; handy chestnut took some recent regrouping after failing to produce out west, but now she's back where she broke her maiden; note the solid Walsh numbers in the categories that apply. BERING STRAIT is a Pletcher filly who was favored at this same level in one of those tough Saturday turf allowances; figures among the top mix again. TEMPLE CITY TERROR, the “other Walsh,” likely needed her Fla. Derby Day return and could be moving best of all in the final frantic yards. Eleventh Race  1. Renata 2. Bright Street 3. Let Them Eat Cake Like the two other turf miles in the Rainbow sequence, the contentious nature of this MSW finale that mostly drew 3yos (9 of the 13) could force many serious players to spread liberally. Seems like RENATA is a good place to start, given how swiftly she closed in her debut 3 Sundays ago; repeat of that flashy effort makes her an obvious consideration. BRIGHT STREET surely learned some valuable lessons when beaten just 5 lengths in the same 3/29 race as the top pick; stats back up the belief that Motion does quite well with 2nd-timers. LET THEM EAT CAKE contended a long way in her first route; prominent here from the first steps. Among the handful of sleepers many players will feel compelled to use is FOLLOW THE FLAG, who gets first Lasix and blinks when rail-drawn.
