McGaughey scheduled for release

Trainer Shug McGaughey, who underwent triple bypass heart surgery last Thursday, was to be released from New York Presbyterian Hospital on Tuesday, according to assistant trainer Buzz Tenney.

"He's much better than he had been previously," Tenney said Monday afternoon. "He had more energy in his voice today, and he'll be released tomorrow."

Tenney said McGaughey, the private trainer for the Phipps family since November 1985, has been walking two times a day since Saturday.

McGaughey is expected to return to the barn on at least a part-time basis in early to mid-July.
