OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Day One Starter will be starting over Thursday when trainer Shug McGaughey cuts him back in distance for a first-level allowance race that serves as the feature on Aqueduct’s eight-race card. McGaughey had hoped that Day One Starter, who has one win from six starts, would be successful stretching out in distance this winter in Florida. But after a runner-up finish in a two-turn allowance race at Tampa Bay Downs and a third as the favorite going 1 1/8 miles at Gulfstream Park, McGaughey has decided to cut the son of Upstart back to 6 1/2 furlongs on Thursday. Last September, Day One Starter won a 6 1/2-furlong maiden race at Aqueduct by 4 1/2 lengths. Asked about his two-turn races, which included an eighth-place finish in the Grade 2 Remsen, McGaughey said, “I’ve been disappointed in all of them to tell you the truth. He’s shown more. So, we’ll cut back in distance and see what happens. McGaughey worked Day One Starter twice on turf during the spring at Payson Park, but will give him one more shot on dirt before considering a surface switch. McGaughey has four wins and six seconds from 14 starters at the Belmont at the Big A spring meet. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Trainer Linda Rice has entered Pair of Socks and Oil Capital, who finished second and third, respectively, behind upset winner Antonio of Venice at this level on April 23. Oil Capital leapt in the air at the break and then rallied widest of all to finish third, three-quarters of a length behind stablemate Pair of Socks. Two starts back, in a starter allowance for horses who had started for a claiming tag of $50,000 or less, Oil Capital was a convincing 3 3/4-length winner with an 86 Beyer Speed Figure. Oil Capital breaks from the rail, but he did win from that post in a maiden $75,000 claimer on Feb. 4, his first start since Rice claimed the horse for $50,000 last November at Churchill Downs. Pair of Socks also didn’t have the smoothest of trips on April 23. He bobbled slightly at the break, then had to wait behind horses entering and around the far turn. Moved into the clear three wide in the stretch, Pair of Sock outfinished his stablemate, but was no match for Antonio of Venice. Options for Growth Equity Growth Equity came out of his victory in Saturday’s Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes in good order but trainer Chad Brown will wait awhile before deciding if he wants to run him in the Belmont Stakes on June 6 at Saratoga. Growth Equity beat Talk to Me Jimmy by two lengths and earned a 93 Beyer Speed Figure for the performance. It was Growth Equity’s first race against winners and first try around two turns but it came against a modest field. The Belmont Stakes is expected to draw Golden Tempo, Renegade, and Chief Wallabee, the first-, second-, and fourth-place finishers from the Kentucky Derby. Brown is also pointing Louisiana Derby and Kentucky Derby 10th-place finisher Emerging Market to the Belmont. “Right now, everyone’s going to the Belmont,” said Brown, adding that Growth Equity “could be a Haskell horse. I’m not saying he’s there yet, but in a few more months he could be.” If Brown decides to pass the Belmont with Growth Equity, there are a number of races he could point him to including the Grade 3, $500,000 Matt Winn at Churchill on June 7, the $300,000 Delaware Derby at Delaware Park on June 13, or the $125,000 Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park on June 13. All three of those races are run at 1 1/16 miles. Growth Equity was one of six winners Brown sent out at Aqueduct over the weekend. One of those was I’m Ready to Go, a 4-year-old gelding by Liam’s Map who won a first-level allowance by 2 1/4 lengths. He ran a mile in 1:34.24 and earned a 92 Beyer Speed Figure. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
