McCarthy will be out 8 to 10 weeks with collarbone, pelvic fractures

Justin N. Lane A specialist confirmed Monday that Trevor McCarthy will not need surgery on either of his injuries.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Jockey Trevor McCarthy will be out of action 8 to 10 weeks after suffering a broken collarbone and pelvic fracture after being involved in a spill during the running of last Friday’s sixth race at Aqueduct.

The good news is that both fractures are non-displaced so McCarthy will not need surgery, “just time and rest to heal,” according to his agent Joey Migliore.

The extent of the pelvic fracture was confirmed on Monday after McCarthy met with a specialist in Manhattan. The broken collarbone was evident right away and diagnosed at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center where McCarthy was brought immediately following the race.

McCarthy on Friday was aboard Ever Summer, who, approaching the quarter pole of the turf allowance race was making an outside move. Jalon Samuel, aboard Rhombique, brought his horse off the rail, creating a chain reaction in which several horses were carried out. Ever Summer wound up clipping heels with Unruly Julie, another horse who was impacted by Samuel’s actions.

Ever Summer unseated McCarthy and then appeared to land on the jockey. Ever Summer got up and jogged through the lane before being apprehended by an outrider. Christophe Clement the trainer of Ever Summer, reported that the 3-year-old filly Ever Summer was uninjured.

McCarthy lay on the turf before being attended by on-site emergency medical technicians. He was strapped to a backboard and carried off the course - under two sets of rails - and brought to an awaiting ambulance on the main track. McCarthy was brought to nearby Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.

Rhombique, who finished second under Samuel, was disqualified by the stewards and placed ninth. Samuel was suspended seven days for careless riding by the stewards.

Monday marked exactly one year since McCarthy began riding in New York full-time following a summer stint in Southern California in 2021. McCarthy finished second in the Aqueduct winter standings with 54 winners. For calendar year 2022, McCarthy has ridden 105 winners on the New York Racing Association circuit, sixth best.

Overall, in 2022, McCarthy has won 113 races from 979 mounts and his horses have earned $8,829,488. In May, he captured his first career Grade 1 victory aboard Highland Chief in the Man o’ War at Belmont Park.

“It was a great year before it got cut short at the end here,” Miglore said. “We’ll grind our way back.”
