McCarthy takes off Saturday mounts day after spill

Trevor McCarthy will be off his mounts at Belmont Park on Saturday due to soreness in his lower back after being unseated at the start of Friday’s fifth race at Belmont.
McCarthy was named to ride all 11 races Saturday at Belmont.
“He just didn’t feel like he’d be able to give 100 percent,” Joe Migliore, McCarthy’s agent, said Saturday morning. “He’ll give it a try hopefully tomorrow, if not next week for sure.”
McCarthy is named on five horses Sunday at Belmont.
McCarthy was unseated Friday when his mount, the 3-year-old Remote, stumbled out of the starting gate of a maiden turf race. McCarthy somersaulted over the horse’s head and landed on his back. Though he got up and walked off, he went to a Long Island hospital for X-rays, which came back clean, according to Migliore.

“He landed right on the lower back,” Migliore said. “I think he felt it more after he tried to walk off.”
McCarthy, who had two strong meets at Aqueduct, is just 5 for 74 at the Belmont spring/summer meet, but last week he won his first Grade 1 stakes when he guided Highland Chief to a 19-1 upset in the $700,000 Man o’ War.
