McCarthy scores five wins Wednesday

Trevor McCarthy went 5 for 7 at Delaware Park on Wednesday, just missing the single-day record of six winners, which is jointly held by six riders, including McCarthy’s father, Michael.
The five wins vaulted McCarthy into third place in the Delaware Park rider standings, even though he only rides there on his off days. McCarthy is 49 for 184 (27 percent) at the meet. The meet leaders are Carol Cedeno, who is 64 of 333, including eight Arabian wins, and Tyler Conner, who is 55 for 311.
McCarthy finished second in the Monmouth Park rider standings this summer and is third in the Laurel Park standings. Both of those meets overlap with Delaware, which concludes its 2015 season Saturday.
Michael McCarthy ranks second among jockeys in career wins at Delaware Park and won six riding titles there as Trevor was growing up – 1996-2000 and 2002. He won six races on a card twice, once in 1997 and again in 1998.
The other riders to have won six races in a single day at Delaware, which opened in 1937, are Joe Rocco Jr. in 2011, Jimmy Edwards in 1984, Greg McCarron in 1974, George Cusimano in 1968, and Eldon Nelson in 1958.
Trevor McCarthy, a 21-year-old native of Wilmington, Del., scored his first win Wednesday in race 2 aboard Traipse in Utopia ($7.20). He won the third on Va Banque ($5.20), the fifth on Fifth Avenue Flash ($8.40), the sixth on Hiram ($19.60), and the seventh on Dancing Lion ($3.20). He finished third and sixth on his other two mounts.
