Maybellene ready for Starlet after workout
Maybellene, second in the four-runner Desi Arnaz Stakes over seven furlongs at Del Mar on Nov. 16, will be trainer Bob Baffert’s lone hope in the $350,000 Starlet Stakes for 2-year-old fillies over 1 1/16 miles next Saturday at Los Alamitos.
Sunday at Santa Anita, Maybellene worked a half-mile in 48.60 seconds.
“She’s all set,” Baffert said. “She’s been solid so far.”
Owned by Baffert’s wife, Jill, Maybellene was 11th of 12 in the Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes over 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita on Sept. 27 after stumbling at the start and being eased. She won a maiden race over a mile in her third career start at Del Mar on Aug. 31, and rebounded from the Chandelier loss to win an optional claimer over a mile at Santa Anita on Oct. 23.
The Arnaz Stakes was run over seven furlongs.
The favorite for the Starlet will be Take Charge Brandi, who won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in a 61-1 upset at Santa Anita on Nov. 1 and won the Delta Downs Princess Stakes in Louisiana on Nov. 23. A win in the Starlet Stakes would clinch the Eclipse Award as the nation’s leading 2-year-old filly of 2014.
Other expected runners in the Starlet field are Achiever’s Legacy and Light the City, who were first and third in the Arnaz; Feathered, Danette, and Conquest Eclipse, who were fourth, fifth, and seventh in the BC Juvenile Fillies; and Majestic Presence, who rebounded from a ninth in the BC Juvenile Fillies to finish third behind Take Charge Brand in the Princess Stakes
