Maxwell pays visit to track

Retired jockey Jeanie Maxwell was on hand Tuesday to renew old acquaintances from her days at Detroit Race Course and Hazel Park. Maxwell rode mostly for her father, the late Pete Maxwell, at the old Michigan courses. Between 1976 and 1989, she won 629 races, including four stakes.

The Maxwells, from Elk City, Okla., were a prominent force in Midwest racing. Maxwell's uncles - O.D., A.D., and Amin - all trained horses and her cousin Hoyt was a jockey. The Maxwells were instrumental in the careers of numerous individuals, including Mary Bacon, who paved the way for other female riders.

After racing, Maxwell returned to Oklahoma, where she now has her own antique jewelry business. Following the last race on Tuesday's card, she posed with the old Detroit gang in a very crowded winner's circle group shot.
