HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Maxfield, one of the leading 2-year-olds of 2019, returned recently to the Brendan Walsh barn at the Palm Meadows training center after undergoing rehabilitation at Bridlewood Farm in Ocala, Fla. Maxfield had a small ankle chip removed shortly after being scratched from the Nov. 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. “He’s back galloping at Palm Meadows and we’ll monitor him this week as to when he can start back working,” Walsh said Wednesday from New Orleans. “But he’s done great physically and is moving great, too.” :: To stay up to date, follow us on: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter Maxfield, a Godolphin homebred, is unbeaten in two starts, ending with a 5 1/2-length romp in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland in October. The Street Sense colt was the third morning-line choice for the BC Juvenile before he began showing signs of an injury several days prior to the race. Walsh said no exact plan to make the May 2 Kentucky Derby has been mapped out. “We’re going to see how he does, let him tell us where we are with him,” Walsh said. “I’d say we’ll know a lot more in a month or so. I wouldn’t rule anything out, and I wouldn’t rule anything in. It’ll be a waiting game with him for a little while.” Maxfield closed at 13-1 in the first pool of the 2020 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, held Nov. 28-Dec. 1. Pool 2 is set for Feb. 7-9.
