Mawing breaks leg in spill

Chuck Dybdal|Apr 02, 2009

Jockey Leslie Mawing suffered compound fractures of the tibia and fibula in his left leg on Wednesday when his mount Pasta Time crashed through the turf course inner rail during the seventh race at Golden Gate Fields, according to track physician David Seftel.

The 35-year-old native of South Africa ranked fourth in the Golden Gate Fields jockey standings with 42 victory and seemed headed for No. 43 when Pasta Time moved to the lead entering the stretch in the 1 1/16-mile race. But the 4-year-old colt suddenly ducked into the inside rail and fell. The colt appeared uninjured except for lacerations to his left front leg.

Mawing was rushed to Highland Hospital in Oakland and was expected to undergo emergency surgery on his leg, according to Seftel.
