Maurice wins fourth straight in Yasuda Kinen
Maurice extended his winning streak to four races with a win in Sunday’s $1,554,918 Yasuda Kinen at a mile on turf at Tokyo, the first win in a Grade 1 for the 4-year-old colt.
Sent off as the 5-2 favorite in a field of 18, Maurice was fifth early and moved into third with a quarter-mile remaining. Ridden by Yuga Kawada for Noriyuki Hori, Maurice won by a neck over the 5-1 Vincennes. Clarente, a 41-1 outsider, was third, beaten 1 1/2 lengths.
Maurice’s winning streak includes the Grade 3 Lord Derby Challenge Trophy at Nakayama Racecourse on April 5. Owned by Kazumi Yoshida, Maurice has won 6 of 11 starts.
The Yasuda Kinen was the second Grade 1 win in as many weekends for Hori, who won the Japanese Derby with Duramente on May 31.
** Dylan Mouth, winner of the 2014 Italian Derby, won Sunday’s $269,079 Gran Premio di Milano in Italy for his second Group 1 win in three starts.
Ridden by Fabio Branca, Dylan Mouth, the 1-5 favorite, stalked pacesetter and stablemate Celticus for the first mile of the race at 1 1/2 miles, took the lead with a quarter-mile to go, and won by five lengths over the 2-1 Billabong. Celticus held third in the field of eight.
Dylan Mouth, a 4-year-old colt by Dylan Thomas, won the Group 1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club last October and a Group 3 race May 17. Trained by Stefano Botti, Dylan Mouth is unbeaten in nine starts in Italy. His only loss was an eighth in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2014.
