Masochistic faces tough challenge in optional claimer
DEL MAR, Calif. – Masochistic, who tested positive for a tranquilizer when fifth in his career debut in March at Santa Anita and has since won consecutive starts, faces his toughest career test in an optional claimer at seven furlongs in Saturday’s fourth race.
Trained by A.C. Avila, the 4-year-old Masochistic beat maidens by 14 lengths over six furlongs May 3 at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day and won an optional claimer for California-breds here at 6 1/2 furlongs July 31.
On Saturday, Masochistic is part of the field of six, which includes Kristo, who was third behind California Chrome in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita in March, and Winning Machine, who was stakes placed at Emerald Downs in 2013.
Avila said Wednesday he expects improvement from Masochistic, who will be ridden by Victor Espinoza.
“He has to prove more for me,” Avila said. “He won easy, but I don’t know what will happen when he faces pressure. I think he’s a miler the way he works. He can surprise me. I trust what I see in the afternoon.”
The California Horse Racing Board filed a complaint against Avila earlier this year for the tranquilizer positive. Earlier this month, an administrative law judge conducted a hearing on the case. The administrative law judge will make a recommendation to the racing board for a potential penalty for Avila, who could face a fine or suspension.
The case may not be completed for several months.
