Maryquitecontrary defeats elders in Sheer Drama Stakes

The promising 3-year-old filly Maryquitecontrary defeated older rivals Saturday when she was up for a neck win over Starship Nala in the $65,000 Sheer Drama at Gulfstream Park. It was another 3 1/2 lengths back in third to Don’t Get Khozy.

The Sheer Drama was a seven-furlong race for fillies and mares.

Maryquitecontrary ($5.60) was making just the fourth start of her career, entering off an allowance win at Gulfstream. She had one horse beat early, as Restofthestory, Frankly My Dear, and Corey contested the lead through fractions of 23.04 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.89 for the half-mile. Maryquitecontrary put in a strong stretch bid and covered the distance on a fast track in 1:23.42.

“She needed time to get herself together on the turn because she has such a long stride,” winning rider Luca Panici told the publicity department at Gulfstream. “She has a good brain because at the end when she has a target she goes after it.”

Panici was aboard for trainer Joe Cantanese.

Maryquitecontrary is a daughter of First Dude who races for her breeder, Rodney G. Lundock. She is from the female family of millionaire Supah Blitz. Maryquitecontrary has now won 3 of 4 starts for earnings of $111,130.

It is a 20-cent bet and has not been solved with a unique winning ticket for the last 12 race dates following a mandatory payout Aug. 13, according to a press release from Gulfstream. The Rainbow 6 will run on races 4-9 on Sunday.
