ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Maryland invader Newstome mowed down all the speed en route to an easy 5 1/2-length score in Saturday’s $101,400 Woodstock, the first stakes of the Woodbine meet. Newstome raced along the inside in fourth to the quarter pole, while Untitled and Lookinatamiracle pressed the leader Aye Aye Sir through honest fractions in the six-furlong dash. Newstome began to mount a wide bid exiting the turn, and then blew by the leaders nearing the eighth pole before drawing away to prevail in a time of 1:09.99. Odds-on favorite Untitled finished second, and Lookinatamiracle faded to third in the six-horse field. In the middle of the turn, I was just loaded with a lot of horse. Owlette wire to wire in Star Shoot The favored Owlette went straight to the front and never looked back to take the $116,800 Star Shoot Stakes by 1 3/4 lengths over reigning Canadian champion 2-year-old filly Curlin’s Voyage. Owlette ($6.50) set sharp fractions of 22.13 and 44.72 seconds under Jerome Lermyte in the six-furlong sprint for 3-year-old fillies. She covered the distance in 1:09.55, which was .44 faster than the boys ran in the previous race, the Woodstock Stakes. “I had a chance to get on her a few times in the morning, and I was very confident,” Lermyte said. “She proved today that she has the ability. The whole trip, she kept me confident. When we turned for home, she was still nice and relaxed. I knew I had another gear. I was confident the whole way.” Curlin’s Voyage rallied inside from sixth to finish 1 1/2 lengths clear of Coach Lori. Two Sixty wound up fourth, and second choice New York Groove was a non-threatening fifth in the nine-horse field.
