Martin fined, gets probation

Matt Hegarty|Sep 28, 2006

Trainer Greg Martin, who was arrested in early 2005 and charged with administering an illegal substance to a racehorse in 2003, was sentenced Thursday to six months probation and fined $2,000, according to records of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Martin, one of 17 people indicted in a wide-ranging investigation into illegal gambling, had faced a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The trainer had entered a guilty plea to the charge of administering banned alkalyzing agents to A One Rocket on Dec. 18, 2003, before a race at Aqueduct.

According to court records, a charge against Martin alleging wire fraud was dismissed by Judge Miriam Goldman Cederbaum at the hearing.
