ARCADIA, Calif. - Last March, Selcourt and Marley’s Freedom were first and second in the Grade 2 Santa Monica Stakes at Santa Anita. This year, the results were reversed. On Saturday, Marley’s Freedom won her fifth stakes in her last six starts in the $200,000 Santa Monica Stakes for fillies and mares at seven furlongs, finishing 1 1/4 lengths in front of runner-up Selcourt. Selcourt had a comfortable lead by 2 1/2 lengths on the turn but could not hold off Marley’s Freedom, who was timed in 1:22.34. Marley’s Freedom earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 99. Sent off favored, Marley’s Freedom ($3.40) was ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, who feared Selcourt was getting away as a lone leader through the first half-mile. “I had to go after Selcourt pretty early,” Van Dyke said. “It didn’t look like she was stopping. This is a classy mare. With her ability and her class, she got it done.” Selcourt finished 1 1/2 lengths in front of 20-1 Mopotism, who was followed by Escape Clause and Paradise Woods in the small field. Selcourt is winless in three starts since the 2018 Santa Monica Stakes. She was 12th in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Churchill Downs in November after a layoff of more than seven months and second as the 3-10 favorite in the minor Kalookan Queen Stakes here on Jan. 13. “It was a good race for her,” trainer John Sadler said of the Santa Monica. “The winner is a good filly.” The Santa Monica Stakes was the first start for Paradise Woods since she was transferred from trainer Richard Mandella to John Shirreffs in December.  Paradise Woods was third on the turn, but faded from contention in the stretch. There were two scratches. Amuse was withdrawn in favor of a start in an allowance race with an $80,000 claiming option on Monday. The multiple stakes winner Dream Tree was withdrawn by trainer Bob Baffert in favor of a stakes race in coming weeks, he said. Marley’s Freedom, a 5-year-old mare by Blame, is trained by Baffert for Ron and Barbara Perry’s Cicero Farms. Marley’s Freedom has won 8 of 15 starts and earned $935,935. She was transferred from trainer Bob Hess Jr. to Baffert last spring, after the Santa Monica. For Baffert, Marley’s Freedom is nearly perfect. Her only loss in the six-race span since she joined his stable was a fourth as the 9-10 favorite in the BC Filly and Mare Sprint. Marley’s Freedom ended her 2018 campaign with a win in the Grade 3 Go For Wand Stakes at a mile at Aqueduct on Dec. 1. Baffert said the Santa Monica Stakes may lead to a start in the Grade 1 Beholder Mile here on March 16. Belvoir Bay wins Wishing Well Belvoir Bay ($3.40) won her fifth stakes in her last seven starts in Saturday's $74,104 Wishing Well Stakes for fillies and mares at five furlongs on turf. Belvoir Bay pulled clear in the stretch to win by 4 3/4 lengths over 14-1 Lady Suebee. A Little Bit Me, a 9-1 chance, finished third in the field of nine. Poster Girl (11-1) unseated jockey Mike Smith at the start when she veered to the inside from the first post position. Smith was quickly on his feet. Poster Girl ran freely during the race and was caught while pulling up. Belvoir Bay ran five furlongs in 56.39 seconds and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 100, which equals her career best. The race was scheduled for about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course but was switched to five furlongs on the oval course because of rain on Friday. Santa Anita recently changed its policy for races that come off the hillside turf course, giving the track the option of running a race at five furlongs on turf instead of 6 1/2 furlongs on dirt. Belvoir Bay, a 6-year-old mare by Equiano, races for Gary Barber and trainer Peter Miller. Joel Rosario rode Belvoir Bay, who has won 11 of 24 starts in her career.
