Maria's Mirage captures Woodside Handicap

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Maria's Mirage ($11.80) took the lead immediately out of the gate and extended her margin at every call as she won the $61,300 Woodside Handicap at Bay Meadows on Sunday.

The 4-year-old filly beat favored Lacie Girl, who closed to edge Fertile by a nose, by five lengths in the first five-furlong turf race run on the Longden Turf Course. The hand-timed final time was 56.75.

"She's about as fast as they come," winning rider Luis Jauregui said. "She's fast, one-dimensional. I wanted to save something till the end. I never asked her till the end when she was laying into the rail."

Maria's Mirage, who won the Cactus Flower Handicap at Turf Paradise on March 8, has now won four of nine starts. She earned $33,850 Sunday to lift her career total to $136,103.
