It’s boys versus girls Saturday night in the Grade 2, $271,950 Firecracker Futurity at Delta Downs. The field of Quarter Horses is equally split between fillies and colts, with Marfilous leading the charge of five females in the 10-horse race and the male contingent topped by Sizzlin Stewart. Marfilous set the fastest qualifying time for the Firecracker, when she won her 350-yard trial in 17.68 seconds June 11 at Delta. The race came in the mud. It was one of six trials for the Firecracker. David Alvarez was aboard and has the mount again for owner and trainer Martin Trejo. Sizzlin Stewart is the lone stakes winner in the field, having accounted for the $88,000 Old South Futurity in May at Delta. He was second in his trial for the Firecracker, finishing a length behind Platinum Fdd, who set the second fastest qualifying time by winning in 17.71. Gilbert Ortiz has the mount on Sizzlin Stewart for P and D Racing and trainer Kenneth Roberts.
