ETOBICOKE, Ontario – In a sparse six-horse field, British Royalty should be able to rebound off a lackluster performance when traveling 1 3/8 miles on the main turf Sunday in the Grade 3, $150,000 Singspiel Stakes at Woodbine. British Royalty came from the claiming ranks to capture the 2021 Breeders’ Stakes going 1 1/2 miles on yielding ground. He has evolved into a long-distance turf specialist this year under the guidance of trainer and co-owner Barbara Minshall. After ending up second in a 1 1/2-mile allowance at Keeneland in April, British Royalty ran second to the German raider Loft in the Grade 2 Belmont Gold Cup over two miles on June 10. He shortened up to 1 1/2 miles a month later in Belmont’s Grand Couturier Stakes and finished fourth after lacking room along the rail on the turn for home. :: DRF Bets members get FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic. Sent off as the 5-2 favorite, he was never in contention and wound up seventh. “His last race wasn’t the best, but I don’t think it was the fault of anybody,” Minshall said. “It just didn’t work out the way I wanted the trip to work out. So, we’ll try again. He’ll sit anywhere in a race.” British Royalty worked five-eighths in a bullet 59.60 seconds in company on the Tapeta last Sunday, much to the delight of Minshall. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match and FREE Formulator PPs! King Vega, an improving 4-year-old based at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland, is seemingly the one to catch. King Vega ran hot and cold in England in 2020-21, the highlight of which was a blowout triumph in a 1 1/4-mile race last September at Goodwood. King Vega found the mark in a first-level allowance in his third North American race in June at Delaware. He was headstrong on the early lead most recently in the 1 1/8-mile Buckland Stakes at Colonial and never looked back in a comfortable score with a 93 Beyer Speed Figure. Rafael Hernandez will ride King Vega for trainer Graham Motion. They’ve combined for two wins and two seconds from just five starters at this meet. Collective Force filled out the trifecta in both the Breeders’ and the Grade 3 Valedictory last year. He began this year with three straight dismal performances on the Tapeta before ending his slide with a close second in the Niagara. Antonio Gallardo retains the mount on Collective Force for trainer Rachel Halden. Rounding out the Singspiel lineup are a trio of supplements – Enchant Me, Ready for the Lady, and Elusive Knight.
