Manitoba Derby rivals rematched

Adam Goss|Aug 22, 2002

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Silver Greek is the probable favorite in a field of seven 3-year-olds in Saturday's $30,000 Harry Jeffery Stakes at 1 1/8 miles.

Silver Greek comes off a second-place finish in the Manitoba Derby. Trained by Chad Torevell, Silver Greek's lone win came here in maiden special weight company in his start before the Manitoba Derby. Tim Gardiner will ride Silver Greek, who breaks from post 4.

Ekati and Beau Pip also exit the Manitoba Derby, in which they finished third and fourth.

Trained by Jim Smith, Ekati is the likely speed of the race and will break from the outside under Rohan Singh.

Beau Pip's lone win came three starts ago in the restricted Manitoba Stakes. Trained by Raymond Liu, Beau Pip finished fourth behind the victorious Ekati in the Derby Trial Stakes two starts ago. He will begin from post 6 with Jason Leacock aboard.

Pat's Creek has won all three of his starts here this year. His last win came over $10,000 claimers, which are likely tougher than the competition he will face here. Pat's Creek starts from post 5 with Navin Mangalee up. He is trained by Darla Singh.

John Crainer is the only horse in the field with a win at nine furlongs, and also is the most experienced contestant with 15 starts. Claimed by trainer Gordon Marsh out of his last outing for $6,250, John Crainer will be ridden by Ken Hendricks from post 3.

Alberta invader Crescent Remark won two races as a

2-year-old, including the Canadian Juvenile at Northlands, but has failed to win in five starts in Alberta this year. Crescent Remark, trained by Tom Dodds, has drawn the rail and will be ridden by Jerry Pruitt.

Rounding out the field is Big R, who is owned and trained by Ralph Buchholz. Big R won his only start as a 2-year-old here in the restricted North Dakota Futurity, but has yet to win in five tries this year. He will start from post 2 under Jacques DesAutels.
