ARCADIA, Calif. – Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella plans to have starters in the three major stakes at Santa Anita on May 25 – the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile, Grade 1 Gamely Stakes, and Grade 2 Hollywood Gold Cup. The May 25 program is the most lucrative of the track’s spring meeting, which began in mid-April and continues through June 14. Mandella said on Wednesday that Subsanador, best known for winning the Grade 1 California Crown Stakes at Santa Anita in September 2024, is on schedule for the $200,000 Gold Cup at 1 1/4 miles on dirt, pending a workout in the next week. Subsanador worked a half-mile in 48.40 seconds on Monday. “I’m looking at the Gold Cup,” Mandella said. “Before we do that, we’ll work him one more time. He looks really good so far.” Mike Smith is booked to ride Subsanador in the Gold Cup, Mandella said. :: Play Santa Anita racing with confidence. Get DRF Past Performances, Clocker Reports, and more. Owned by Wathnan Racing, Subsanador was sidelined for 18 months because of an injury after the $1 million California Crown. This year, Subsanador has finished fourth in two starts – the Grade 3 San Carlos Stakes at seven furlongs at Santa Anita in March, and the Lake Ouachita Stakes at a mile at Oaklawn Park on May 2. In his last start, Subsanador stumbled at the start, and emerged from the race with irritated skin on his ankles, Mandella said. Monday’s workout was Subsanador’s first since the trip to Oaklawn Park. The Gold Cup nominations include British Isles and Vodka Vodka, the first two finishers of the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap in March. Mandella plans to start Seal Team and Sumter in what is expected to be a competitive running of the $300,000 Shoemaker Mile on turf. Other candidates are King of Gosford and Mi Hermano Ramon, who were first and second in the 2025 Shoemaker; El Potente, who won the Grade 3 Thunder Road Stakes at Santa Anita in February; Almendares and Genius Jimmy, who were first and second in the Grade 3 American Stakes at Santa Anita on April 18; and Formidable Man, who has not raced since a second to Notable Speech in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Del Mar last November. The list of nominees does not include Final Boss, the upset winner of the Grade 2 Frank Kilroe Mile on turf at Santa Anita in March. Final Boss has not had a published workout since mid-April. In the $300,000 Gamely Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles on turf, Mandella intends to start May Day Ready, who was second to Take A Breath in the Grade 3 Royal Heroine Stakes at a mile on turf on April 25 in her first start of 2026. Take A Breath, a two-time stakes winner this year, is expected to run in the Gamely, a field scheduled to include Thought Process, the winner of the Grade 2 Buena Vista Stakes at a mile on turf in February in her lone start this year. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
