Mandella readies Set Sail, Subconscious, and Royal Ship for upcoming stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. – Set Sail, Subconscious, and Royal Ship are scheduled to represent trainer Richard Mandella in graded stakes in coming weeks. The veteran turf runner United is far from a comeback, however.
Set Sail is scheduled to start in Saturday’s Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park.
“I think he’s pretty good,” Mandella said.
On Saturday, Set Sail worked seven furlongs in 1:25.80 for the $200,000 Peter Pan Stakes at 1 1/8 miles for 3-year-olds. Owned by the Roth family’s LNJ Foxwood Stable, Set Sail won a maiden special weight race at a mile by 7 1/2 lengths in his second start on March 27. Mandella said Joel Rosario is booked to ride Set Sail, a colt by Malibu Moon.
Subconscious worked a mile in 1:39 on Saturday for the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile on turf on May 30, the same day Royal Ship is booked to run in the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup at 1 1/4 miles on dirt.

Subconscious, 4, has not raced since he finished third by a neck in the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile on turf on March 5. Royal Ship was second in the 2021 Hollywood Gold Cup. A 6-year-old Brazilian-bred gelding, Royal Ship won his 2022 debut by five lengths in the John Shear Mile on April 10.
United was withdrawn from the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Del Mar in the days before the race last November after he was diagnosed with a strained suspensory. The injury has not progressed enough for United to resume full training, Mandella said.
“He still shows a little something,” Mandella said. “We’ll give him a lot of time.”
Mandella said United will begin some exercise, including walking on a water treadmill, to enhance recovery.

“If you stimulate it, things heal up,” he said.
Owned by LNJ Foxwoods, the 7-year-old United has won 10 of 22 starts and earned $1,813,549 in a career with seven stakes wins.
