HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Oaklawn Park has been a magnet for Grade 1 winners this meet, and that trend will continue through the closing-day card Saturday with Subsanador shipping in from Southern California for the $200,000 Lake Ouachita. The 1 1/16-mile stakes for 4-year-olds and up highlights a 13-race card that has a special first post of 12:15 p.m. Central. A second stakes, the $200,000 Arkansas Breeders’ Championship, drew 11, while the meet’s final race, the Trail’s End starter allowance, lured 14 to race 1 3/4 miles. The infield is scheduled to be open for an afternoon forecast to be sunny and in the 70s. The festivities close out a meet that drew 2025 Horse of the Year Sovereignty, champion Nitrogen, and Grade 1 winners Skippylongstocking, White Abarrio, Journalism, La Cara, Saudi Crown, Full Serrano, Sandman, and Stronghold. Magnitude and Banishing also ran at the meet and went on to win major stakes in Dubai. Subsanador was a multiple Group 1 winner in his native Argentina before capturing the Grade 1 California Crown in September 2024 at Santa Anita. He faces seven others in the Lake Ouachita, including Grade 2 winner Coal Battle. Subsanador will be trainer Richard Mandella’s first starter at Oaklawn since he won the 2019 Arkansas Derby with Omaha Beach. :: Live racing action at Oaklawn Park! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. “We just didn’t have anything to run in out here, so the timing came up right,” Mandella said of targeting the Lake Ouachita. “And it just looks like a nice thing to try.” The start will be the second off a layoff for Subsanador, who was fourth in the Grade 3 San Carlos over seven furlongs March 29 at Santa Anita. “We knew it was too short for him,” Mandella said. “We just wanted to try and get a race into him. We hope to get on to bigger things. He likes a little more distance than this even, but we just want to get him back on track.” Ramon Vazquez, who entered the final week of the meet on top of the jockey standings, has the mount on Subsanador from post 7. Subsanador, who has shown versatility in his races, is a winner of 9 of 18 starts and has earned more than $1 million. The 7-year-old by the Distorted Humor stallion Fortify is owned by Wathnan Racing. Coal Battle will be making his first start since finishing second by a half-length in the Grade 3 Indiana Derby on July 5. The race produced three next-out stakes winners in Tip Top Thomas, the winner who returned to take the Smarty Jones at Parx Racing; Instant Replay, who came back to win the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs; and Big Truzz, who in his next start won the Ellis Park Derby. Coal Battle won last year’s Smarty Jones and Grade 2 Rebel at Oaklawn and was third in the Arkansas Derby. He has been working here for his return for Norman Stables and trainer Lonnie Briley. Corey Lanerie has been named to ride Coal Battle, as well as several other horses on the card. Willy D’s is moving back to dirt after winning the Grade 3 Kentucky Cup Classic over the synthetic track at Turfway Park. Mackman was second to Skippylongstocking last out in the Grade 3 Essex at Oaklawn. :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  Arkansas Breeders’ Championship Zippy Mark will be looking for his third consecutive victory of the meet when he takes on defending winner One Ten Stadium in the Arkansas Breeders’ Championship. The 1 1/16-mile race is for 3-year-olds and up bred in Arkansas. Zippy Mark has won a pair of overnight races by a combined 10 lengths in his most recent starts. He owns the field’s best last-race Beyer Figure, an 86, and could get an ideal stalking trip off such rivals as Willow Creek Road, Rock Solo, and Triple Up. Manny Esquivel has the mount on Zippy Mark for trainer Kenny McPeek. Triple Up is moving to two turns off a dead-heat win in a first-level allowance in which he covered six furlongs in a quick 1:10.97. Triple Up is a half-brother to Net Gain, a multiple stakes winner around two turns who earned $574,125. Walter De La Cruz has the mount for trainer Shea Stuart, who also saddles the capable Cybertown, who was second in last year’s Arkansas Breeders’ Championship. ◗ Bright Spark, a multiple winner at the meet by Arrogate, could go favored in the $135,000 Trail’s End. “He seems like he wants to run all day,” said co-owner Staton Flurry. “We’re looking forward to getting him in the starting gate. I think everybody who runs here at Oaklawn, the Trail’s End is kind of one on their bucket list.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
