Maldonado back in the saddle Thursday
CYPRESS, Calif. – Edwin Maldonado is scheduled to resume riding Thursday at Los Alamitos after missing part of Saturday’s and all of Sunday’s card because of a mild concussion sustained in a spill.
Maldonado was unseated from Discreetly Leah on Saturday after the filly suffered a severe injury on the turn of a $20,000 claimer for maidens in Saturday’s second race. Maldonado was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent tests before being released.
Saul Marquez, Maldonado’s agent, said the rider had a “mild concussion.”
“He’ll be 100 percent on Thursday,” Marquez said. “He’ll be back.”
Maldonado has won 49 races this year. He has had an excellent start to the Los Alamitos meet last week, winning two races on Thursday’s program and two on Friday.
Discreetly Leah could not be saved and was euthanized.
Jockey Gonzalez suspended 3 days
Jockey Santiago Gonzalez has been given a three-day suspension for his ride on Chalon in Saturday’s $75,000 Beverly Lewis Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Los Alamitos.
Chalon finished third, and was beaten a head for second by Faypien. Gonzalez was judged to have “failed to ride his mount to the finish, costing him a better position,” according to a ruling issued Sunday by stewards Scott Chaney, Luis Jauregui, and Tom Ward.
Chalon closed from fifth to be second with a furlong remaining. Gonzalez did not use his whip in the final sixteenth.
The suspension covers racing Satuday, Sunday, and Sept. 21.
