Makin My Move rallies to win Honey Bee Stakes
Makin My Move made a last-to-first move to win the scratch-riddled $75,000 Honey Bee Stakes over a laboring Meadowlands turf course on Friday night.
Eleven were entered in the Honey Bee, a five-furlong dash for 3-year-old fillies, but only six went to post racing over a grass course labeled “good” but seemingly wetter than that. Ulikeapples set the pace through a reasonable opening quarter-mile in 22.17 seconds, but the half-mile split was a slow 47.41 and Makin My Move’s winning time was 1:00.53, about five seconds off the course record.

Makin My Move generally had pressed and stalked in her previous starts, but jockey Kendrick Carmouche was content letting the filly drop back to last, several lengths behind the leader, into the Honey Bee’s one turn. Makin My Move rallied wide, looming into contention at the quarter pole and easily passing Kodama in the final furlong to win by 1 3/4 lengths. She paid $5.60 as the favorite, with 2-1 second choice Benbang never really in the race and fading to last.
John Kimmel trains Makin My Move for her breeders, Mary and Chester Broman. A New York-bred, Makin My Move is by Carpe Diem out of Hard to Stay Notgo, by More than Ready.
