Aqueduct

Make It in Ny a question at the distance, but so is everyone else

David Grening|Jan 24, 2022

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – According to DRF Formulator, trainer Rob Atras is 8 for 16 first off the claim at Aqueduct over the last 90 days, which may be the most positive stat one could find regarding Thursday’s first-level New York-bred allowance feature at Aqueduct.

In this 1 1/8-mile race, Atras sends out Make It in Ny, whom he and owner Sanford Goldfarb claimed for $25,000 out of a third-place finish in a one-mile race on Dec. 30. Like the majority of this field, Make It in Ny is an unknown quantity at nine furlongs, if only because he’s never attempted it. His sire, Laoban, did win the Jim Dandy at nine furlongs, but his mother, Peinture Ancienne, never raced nor did she produce any foals that were successful going that far.

In his most recent win first off the claim, Atras won the Ladies Stakes with Battle Bling, who successfully stretched out from one mile to 1 1/8 miles.

Make It in Ny is only 1 for 8, the win coming 13 months ago here going a one-turn mile for maiden $40,000 claiming.

Make It in Ny does get the services of the hot-riding Dylan Davis, who won four races on Sunday’s card to vault to the top spot in the jockey standings through the first 21 days of the meet.

Atras, the second-leading trainer at the meet with 10 wins, also sends out Therisastormbrewin, who took two starts to win off the Atras claim. Atras took Therisastormbrewin for $20,000 last October. After finishing third in his subsequent start, Therisastormbrewin won for $25,000 on Dec. 16.

Therisastormbrewin is trying 1 1/8 miles for the first time and he figures to be the main speed of the field breaking from the outside post under Manny Franco.

Run for Boston, an 8-year-old gelding by Include trained by Jim Ryerson, is the only proven winner at 1 1/8 miles, though that victory came for maiden $25,000 here nearly three years ago. Run for Boston is coming off a second-place finish to longshot Anything Pazible in this condition over a sloppy track here on Dec. 30.

Kendrick Carmouche rides Run for Boston from post 5.

Chris Englehart, who has a busy day Thursday with six entrants on the eight-race card, sends out Kodiak Brown in this spot. Kodiak Brown, a gelding by Big Brown, finished fourth in the same race in which Run for Boston ran second on Dec. 30.

Englehart said he was looking at a shorter race for Kodiak Brown next week, but went in here when the field came up with only six horses.

Straight Skinny finished in front of Make It in Ny in that $25,000 claimer on Dec. 30. His only win in nine starts came on the front end in an off-the-turf race going 1 1/16 miles at Belmont when he was 44-1.

Son of an Ex displayed a mammoth reversal of form winning a weak maiden-special race at an underlaid 10-1 on Jan. 6. A repeat of that effort would make him a contender in this spot.

With an eight-race card on tap, first post Thursday is 12:50 p.m.
