Major New Zealand stallion dead

Alan Shuback|Apr 20, 2004

Centaine, one of New Zealand's leading stallions for many years, died Monday at his longtime base of Waikato Stud near Te Rapa. He was 23.

An Australian-bred son of Century, Centaine was a Group 3 winner in his native land and was celebrated throughout the Southern Hemisphere as the sire of 57 stakes winners.

Among his most notable offspring was a champion New Zealand filly, Sixty Seconds, the winner of last year's Grade 3 Glens Falls Handicap at Saratoga. Spring Rain, champion filly in New Zealand at 2 and 3; New Zealand juvenile champion Cordero; and Australian champion filly Slight Chance were two of his other 12 Group 1 winners.
