Maiden upsets heavy favorite

Mrs. Began ($11.20) won her maiden in style at Woodbine, taking the $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes over heavily favored Victory Romance.

Victory Romance set tepid fractions under Todd Kabel in the 1 1/16-mile race for 2-year-old fillies. Mrs. Began stalked throughout along the inside under Jim McAleney, and wore down Victory Romance in the stretch to prevail by a neck, in a time of 1:47.10. Reverently finished a distant third in the five-horse field of Canadian-breds.

"We had a wonderful trip," said McAleney. "I had more than enough horse to get there."

It was the first start since undergoing throat surgery for Mrs. Began, who earned $150,000 for Zayat Stable LLC and trainer Reade Baker.
