Maiden sprint winner Spun Intended has two turns in future

DEL MAR, Calif. – Spun Intended will probably start around two turns in his 3-year-old debut in 2023 after an attractive win in a maiden special weight race at 6 1/2 furlongs on Saturday at Del Mar.
Ridden by Mike Smith, Spun Intended disputed the early pace before pulling clear by 6 1/2 lengths. Spun Intended was timed in 1:15.83 and earned an 87 Beyer Speed Figure.

“It was a super impressive performance,” trainer Mark Glatt said Sunday. “We kind of expected it off his first race. We’ve been high on the horse since Day 1. We thought if he got a good trip he’d be double tough to beat.
“Mike rode him like he was the best horse. He’s capable of showing speed and still finishing. I think we can think of bigger and better things.”
Glatt said Spun Intended might run in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes for 3-year-olds at a mile on Jan. 8 at Santa Anita.
“We want to see how he bounces back,” Glatt said. “I think two turns should be in his wheelhouse.”
Spun Intended, by Hard Spun, races for Edge Racing and Muir Hut Racing and was purchased for $125,000 at a 2-year-olds in training sale earlier this year.
The $100,000 Sham Stakes also is a possibility for Packs a Wahlop, the winner of two Grade 3 stakes at a mile on turf and the eighth-place finisher in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf on Nov. 4 at Keeneland.
Trained by Jeff Mullins, Packs a Wahlop was fourth on a sealed and sloppy track in a five-furlong maiden race on dirt at Gulfstream Park in June. That came in his debut and is his only start on the surface in five races.
“We’re trying to figure out what to do,” said Tim Cohen of Rancho Temescal, which co-owns Packs a Wahlop.
“I know we’ll try him on the dirt. The question is where and when. He works so well on the dirt. He’s bred for the dirt.”
