Maiden Beacon Rock captures futurity

Beacon Rock ($12.60), a maiden making his third career start, won the $41,600 Os West Oregon Futurity on Sunday at Portland Meadows.

Beacon Rock, owned, trained, and bred by Nick Lowe, sat just behind Ex Tremely Cool through the first six furlongs of the one-mile race. He uncorked a strong kick in the lane to defeat Ex Tremely Cool by 3 3/4 lengths in 1:42.98. Odds-on favorite Chief Jafatica was a troubled fourth.

Beacon Rock, unplaced in his first two starts, earned $22,880 to lift his career earnings to $24,474.
