Magna files Michigan application

Magna Entertainment Corp., the huge racetrack operator, has filed an application to build and run a new racetrack 25 miles from downtown Detroit, the company announced Thursday.

Annette Bacola, the chairman of the Michigan Racing Commission, said that Magna officials filed plans for a "breathtaking" new racetrack on Thursday morning. Bacola said the commission would need through the end of the year to review the plans "to ascertain if they are feasible for Michigan racing."

Magna officials could not be reached for comment late Thursday. Magna already operates Great Lakes Downs, a small track in rural Michigan.
