Maglev's tough trip probably cost him win in Eddie Logan
ARCADIA, Calif. – Maglev’s runner-up finish as the favorite in the $100,200 Eddie Logan Stakes on Sunday received scant coverage. His nightmare trip cost the European import a clear victory in the mile turf race for 3-year-olds.
Maglev broke last, got rank, was blocked through the far turn and into the lane, squeezed through a narrow rail opening in the stretch, and missed by 1 1/2 lengths to perfect-trip winner Cabo Spirit. Maglev’s loss, and the colt’s behavior, frustrated trainer Mark Glatt, though he was aware of Maglev’s reputation as a rogue in Europe.

“He’s run enough times now, but he hasn’t quite got it yet,” Glatt said of Maglev, who is 1 for 6. “But he’s a young horse. It might be a good idea to run him down the hill. Horses that want to pull, especially going long, [the hill] helps them learn to relax a little bit.”
An obvious option for Maglev is the $75,000 Baffle Stakes, a 6 1/2-furlong downhill race for 3-year-olds on Jan. 30. Stay tuned.
