Magic Grant made a statement Friday night when he won his maiden in the $75,000 Clever Trevor Stakes at Remington Park, closing for a 4 1/2-length victory at 23-1. My Buddy Mel finished second, while it was another 2 1/2-lengths back in third to Wish Man. The Clever Trevor was a seven-furlong race for 2-year-olds. It is a local prep for the $300,000 Springboard Mile in December. Magic Grant ($49.80) could see the whole field early, as he trailed behind leaders Third Street and Vino Bianco, who raced through an opening quarter in 22.07 seconds. Third Street continued to lead through a half-mile in 45.53 as Vino Bianco was pulled up on the turn. Richard Eramia was aboard for trainer Eddie Milligan Jr. Magic Grant is a son of Good Magic who was making his second career start after finishing a troubled sixth to Vino Bianco in a maiden special weight at Remington.
