Maedean looks sharp in Demoiselle work

Maedean wins the 2019 Tempted Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack
Joe Labozzetta/NYRA Maedean pulls away to win the Tempted by 5 1/2 lengths under rider Luis Saez.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Maedean, the 5 1/4-length winner of the Tempted at Aqueduct on Nov. 1, worked four furlongs in 48.75 seconds Friday morning over the Belmont Park training track in preparation for a start in next Saturday’s Grade 2, $250,000 Demoiselle Stakes at Aqueduct.

Maedean started about two lengths behind the 3-year-old maiden Up and Onward and finished about a half-length in front at the wire. It was her second breeze since the Tempted.

“Excellent, couldn’t have gone any better,” trainer Mark Hennig said.

Maedean, a daughter of Tapit owned by Don and Donna Adam’s Courtlandt Farms, is 2 for 3, with both wins coming at a one-turn mile. Hennig has said all along he’s looking forward to stretching her out to 1 1/8 miles around two turns, the distance of the Demoiselle.

Maedean was one of several likely Demoiselle contenders who put in workouts Friday at Belmont.

Alandra, third as the favorite in the Grade 1 Alcibiades at Keeneland, worked a half-mile in 50.11 out of the starting gate over the main track. She worked in company with Amends, who is pointing to the Remsen.

Glass Ceiling, a winner of a $40,000 claiming race at Keeneland, worked a half-mile in 48.08 seconds over the training track. Glass Ceiling, now in the barn of Danny Gargan, started two lengths behind stablemates Futuro and Poppy’s Girl, came up three wide at the quarter pole, and finished three lengths in front of the pair at the wire.

“I love that she sat behind and took dirt and galloped out great,” Gargan said. “She wants to go long.”

I Dare U, a debut winner at Belmont on Oct. 25, worked five furlongs in 1:00.79 in company with the unraced 2-year-old So Darn Hot (a half-sister to Come Dancing). I Dare U started a length behind So Darn Hot and remained that margin back at the wire through a final quarter in 23.74 seconds.

Others expected for the Demoiselle are Lake Avenue, Water White, and possibly Critical Value or Daphne Moon.
