DEL MAR, Calif. - The 3-year-old filly division on turf in California is not a one gal group.
Madone, the winner of three stakes from September 2020 to early May this year, outran 2-5 favorite Going Global, the winner of four stakes at Santa Anita from February to May, to win Saturday’s Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes at a mile on turf.
Madone ($13.60) rallied wide through the stretch to finish a half-length in front of Going Global, finishing in 1:35.28 and getting an 86 Beyer Speed Figure.
With a furlong remaining, both fillies were positioned to win, but Madone prevailed in her second meeting with Going Global. In the Grade 3 Honeymoon Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Santa Anita on May 22, Going Global finished first, while Madone raced wide and faded to finish a well-beaten sixth.
Madone, trained by Simon Callaghan for Kaleem Shah, was much sharper under jockey Juan Hernandez in the $202,500 San Clemente. Hernandez kept Madone in eighth toward the inside on the backstretch before launching a wide bid on the turn.
“Simon said to save ground and keep her covered,” Hernandez said. “I had a lot of horse. When I was ready to make my move, I saw the traffic inside and I decided to go outside.”
Going Global raced on the inside throughout. Prat kept Going Global on the rail on the turn and in early stretch, and never lost momentum on that path. Going Global was fourth by less than a length with a furlong remaining and closing ground, giving Prat the hope he could catch Hernandez on Madone.
“I thought I had a good trip,” Prat said. “He may have had the jump, but I was going good. I never had to stop. When I got through, I had time to get by her.
“The winner has been a good filly and she proved it again. They’re both good fillies.”
Tetragonal (12-1) finished third, followed by Karakatsie, Jibber Jabber, Dramatizer, Freedom Flyer, Pizzazz, Nimbostratus, and Equilove.
Nimbostratus, claimed for $150,000 at Santa Anita in May, set a quick pace of 22.26 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 45.86 for a half-mile before fading from contention.
Madone, by Vancouver, has won 5 of 7 starts and earned $331,800. In 2020, Madone won consecutive stakes in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf in September and Surfer Girl Stakes at Santa Anita in October. Madone was eighth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland in November, emerging from the race with a bone chip in an ankle that required surgery.
Madone won her comeback in the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita on May 1 before the disappointing race in the Honeymoon.
The San Clemente was a prep for the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks at 1 1/8 miles on turf on Aug. 21.
