Macias just hangs on in Jack Goodman

ARCADIA, Calif. - Macias won his stakes debut in Saturday's at Santa Anita, but was fully extended to hold off a late threat from Hurricane Ike.

Macias ($4.60) stalked pacesetter Our Minesweeper through early fractions of 22.36 and 44.97 seconds, and took the lead in early stretch. Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Macias led by 1 1/2 lengths in the stretch. He finished the six furlongs in 1:08.98.

Hurricane Ike, last of four for the first half-mile, finished two lengths clear of Privilaged, who was a neck clear of Our Minesweeper. Marcello and Runaway Bandido were scratched.

Macias has won 2 of 3 starts and $68,547 for Zayat Stables and trainer Bob Baffert. Third in his debut, behind Privilaged at Del Mar on Sept. 6, Macias won a maiden race here on Oct. 2.

Baffert said the Goodman Stakes was a prep for the $750,000 CashCall Futurity over 1 1/16 miles on Dec. 19.
