Two days before the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes is held, 3-year-olds with potential aspirations for the Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 29 run in a first-level allowance race at Gulfstream Park. Trainer Brian Lynch entered both Jimmy’s Dailys and Solid Left in Thursday’s allowance race at 1 1/8 miles, a sixteenth of a mile farther than the Fountain of Youth and the same distance as the Florida Derby. Though Solid Left was cross-entered in the Fountain of Youth, Lynch said Monday he is more likely to keep him in the allowance unless there are major defections from the Fountain of Youth. McKellen, trained by Jose D’Angelo, also is cross-entered in both spots. Jimmy’s Dailys looks like the stronger of the two Lynch entrants. After finishing third, with a troubled trip in his debut at Churchill Downs last June, Jimmy’s Dailys was sidelined with a soft-tissue injury that required plenty of time off. Jimmy’s Dailys returned Dec. 28, when he finished fourth as the favorite in a maiden race at Gulfstream before beating the heavily touted Disruptor in a seven-furlong maiden Jan. 25 at Gulfstream. “When we got him back down here we didn’t have a lot of training before we gave him a race,” Lynch said. “He came on from it, and his second start down here was what we were wanting to see. I’m excited seeing how he handles the mile and an eighth. I thought he needed his first start back and then stepped up like I hoped he would and ran fantastic.” :: Play Gulfstream Park with confidence! Solid Left finished eighth in the same maiden race in which Jimmy’s Dailys was fourth Dec. 28. Solid Left came back to win his maiden by 2 1/2 lengths going 1 1/16 miles on Jan. 26. “He was never one of those precocious types, so his first start didn’t surprise me,” Lynch said. “He became a lot more professional in his training and he always acted like a horse that had some talent. I don’t think distance is an issue either.” Luis Saez rides Solid Left from post 4. Grande, a son of Curlin, was a rare 3-year-old first-time starter from the barn of Todd Pletcher who did not take much money on debut. Yet, he battled with and ultimately edged away from heavily favored Camp Hale to win his one-mile debut by 2 1/2 lengths on Jan. 11. Souper Times was a debut winner on turf for trainer Mark Casse. In his dirt debut, he finished a well-beaten second to River Thames, a Pletcher-trained runner who is entered in Saturday’s Fountain of Youth. D’Angelo has entered McKellen and Smoken Boy in Thursday’s race, with McKellen also entered in the Fountain of Youth. McKellen won his debut going a mile at Gulfstream in October and hasn’t run since finishing sixth of seven in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes on Jan. 4. Smoken Boy was a Group 1 winner at 2 in Puerto Rico but flopped in his 3-year-old debut when he finished eighth in the Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay Downs. Smoken Boy goes back on Lasix and will have blinkers removed for this allowance test. Sonic Skidaddle and Indecisiveness complete the field. Integration may go to Dubai Integration, runner-up in the Pegasus World Cup Turf on Jan. 25, is being considered for an overseas trip to Meydan for the $5 million Dubai Turf on April 5, trainer Shug McGaughey said Monday. :: Get Gulfstream Park Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. Available every race day. “It’s in pencil,” McGaughey said. “It’s a long way to go, but it’s a lot of money. If you could go over there and get a piece of it, it’s a pretty nice payday.” Integration has worked twice at Payson Park since the Pegasus, where he was beaten a neck by Spirit of St Louis. Integration, a 5-year-old son of Quality Road, at 3 won the Grade 3 Virginia Derby and Grade 2 Hill Prince and last year won the Arlington Million Preview and the Grade 2 Red Smith. McGaughey said if a decision is made not to go to Dubai, Integration would make his next start either at Keeneland in April or Churchill Downs or Aqueduct in May. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
