Luzzi, Gaffalione try to pull upset
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Lane Luzzi and Tyler Gaffalione will go head-to-head on key contenders in Thursday’s $37,000 allowance feature at Gulfstream. Luzzi rides With a Kiss, and Gaffalione is aboard Tiz Boa in the 7 1/2-furlong turf test for statebred fillies and mares.
Both will have their work cut out to beat likely favorite First Illusion and the lightly raced but improving Somethingelse.
First Illusion returns to allowance company off a series of good efforts against stakes company, including a second-place finish in the Betsy Ross here on July 4. At her best when on the lead, First Illusion will likely have to contend with pace pressure from Dagney’s Revenge on Thursday.
Somethingelse has started just three times, most recently finishing second despite racing greenly under similar conditions Sept. 2.
Luzzi will try to rally With a Kiss from off the pace, much in the same manner he did when guiding the 4-year-old to victory under a $12,500 claiming tag on July 29.
There will be a carryover of $89,559 in the Rainbow 6 when racing resumes on Thursday, and a mandatory payout of the entire pool on Saturday, closing day of the 2016 Gulfstream summer session.
