Lux leads Fincher sweep at Ruidoso
Trainer Todd Fincher swept the top three spots in Sunday’s $154,381 Rio Grande Senor Futurity at Ruidoso Downs on Sunday, when Lux romped by seven lengths over stablemates Roll On Red Raider and Glide Path. A fourth Fincher trainee in the race, Born a Ruler, lost his rider at the start.
Fincher said last week that he prepared 50 young horses for the races this season, as opposed to his typical 30 to 35. The success Sunday comes a day after his trainees Twixy Roll ($8.20) and Diabolical Dame finished one-two in the $198,975 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity.
The Senor was one of six New Mexico-bred stakes run on Sunday’s card, with five for Thoroughbreds. The $392,523 Zia Futurity for Quarter Horses was won by Girlonthego($9.80).
Lux rallied from off the pace, and paid $3.40 after covering 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:05.17. Ruby Gonzalez was aboard Lux for owners Bessie Prather, Steve Prather and Dwayne Taylor.
Kirk and Judy Robison, trainer Henry Dominguez and jockey Ry Eikleberry teamed for a stakes double when Lakehouse Fun ($5.80) captured the $50,000 Lincoln Handicap and Mays or Mantle ($17.40) accounted for the $50,000 Road Runner.
In other stakes, Devons Ca Ching ($5.40) captured the $50,000 Sierra Blanca and On Down the Road ($11.80) won the $50,000 Land of Enchantment.
