Lund pointing Bodenheimer to Iroquois Stakes on Derby Day card

Bodenheimer, an impressive debut winner July 29 at Canterbury Park, will make his next start Sept. 5 in the Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs.
Trainer Valorie Lund had either the one-mile Iroquois or the six-furlong Prairie Gold Juvenile at Prairie Meadows in mind for Bodenhemier, and opted this week for the longer, stronger spot.
Bodenheimer sped to the lead and won 2-year-old maiden-special-weight sprint on turf by 11 1/4 lengths, earning an 82 Beyer Speed Figure. Lund thinks he can stretch out if he’ll relax, and said she’ll adjust Bodenheimer’s training to that end over the next couple weeks.

“We’ll search out a jock that is known for being patient and quiet,” she said. “He came out of the race like he hadn’t even run.”
Meanwhile, Lund will run stable star Mr. Jagermeister, generally a dirt sprinter, in a turf-route allowance race on the Thursday card at Canterbury. With no suitable short dirt race for Mr. Jagermeister, the Minnesota-bred qualifies for this allowance race open to horses that never have won on turf. Mr. Jagermeister finished fourth over the winter in a turf route at Turf Paradise, a race in which the graded-stakes-class turf miler River Boyne was third.
