SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Seize the Grey, the Preakness winner who finished seventh in the Belmont Stakes, worked five furlongs in 59.22 seconds over the Oklahoma training track on Tuesday.
It was the third work for Seize the Grey since the Belmont Stakes, but first in Saratoga.
“Wonderful, by himself, impressive,” trainer D. Wayne Lukas said Wednesday.
Lukas said he is leaning toward running Seize the Grey in the Grade 1 Haskell at Monmouth Park on July 20, but has not ruled out the Jim Dandy at Saratoga on July 27. He said he is definitely trying to get to the Travers on Aug. 24.
The Belmont was Seize the Grey’s third race in five weeks after posting wins in the Pat Day Mile on the Kentucky Derby undercard and then winning the Preakness in front-running fashion.
“We had all those races in succession and the last one was the toughest one on him,” Lukas said. “He went into it real sharp, but he seemed flat that day.”
