Lucky Score shakes off slow start, takes Vigil Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The aptly named Lucky Score rode a closers’ bias to his stakes score in Sunday’s Grade 3 Vigil for 3-year-olds and up at Woodbine.
Lucky Score and the favored Candy Overload both got away slowly in the six-furlong sprint and were at the rear of the eight-horse field on the backstretch.
Warp Ride and Rockcrest traded places up front through honest fractions, and Rockcrest assumed command in the stretch while Lucky Score was in the midst of his wide rally.
Lucky Score got up in deep stretch to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths, in a time of 1:08.63 on the wet Tapeta surface. Secret Reserve finished another neck back in third, a nose in front of Clayton, who was a neck in front of the troubled Candy Overload.

Leo Salles rode Lucky Score, a 4-year-old son of Lookin At Lucky, for trainer Willie Armata.
“This is the third time I rode him,” Salles said. “The second time he finished second, and he flew in the end. I was pretty confident this time. He was perfect. When I press the button, he’s always there for me.”
Lucky Score ($14.70) earned $108,000 of the $180,000 purse for the partnership of Domenic Liscio and Danny Iandoli.
