Lucky Lindy stalks to victory in Ontario Derby

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Lucky Lindy ($7.70) won the Grade 3, $177,900 Ontario Derby convincingly under Robbie Albarado on Sunday at Woodbine.
Lucky Lindy assumed a stalking position in third on the backstretch of the nine-furlong Polytrack route as Decision Day established slow fractions with Ethical Funds hounding him.
Lucky Lindy made his way to the front at the top of the stretch. He then widened his advantage through the lane to score by 3 3/4 lengths over the favored Billy’s Star, who sought room exiting the turn before closing wide to finish second. Breaking Lucky was third in the seven-horse field of 3-year-olds.
The Mark Frostad-trained Lucky Lindy completed the distance in 1:50.64 and earned $108,000 for Augustin Stable.
Albarado rode Lucky Lindy twice here this summer on the grass, finishing second in the Toronto Cup Stakes and third in the Breeders’ Stakes.
“I always thought he was a nice horse, since the first time I rode him here,” said Albarado. “I’m glad Mark had me come back and ride him again. Today was a nice race for him. I think this horse is good enough to go to other places outside of Ontario. It’s only his fifth start. I don’t think we really know the depth of him yet.”
