Lucarelli traines 1,000th winner

Trainer Frank Lucarelli recorded his 1,000th career victory Sunday when Premier Diablo ($10) rallied from last to win the first race under Leslie Mawing at Golden Gate Fields.

The 51-year-old Lucarelli, who began training in 1979 after his professional baseball career ended, is based in Washington. He ranks second in all-time victories at Emerald Downs with 541, while winning three training titles there. He has finished first or second in the training standings in nine of the past 10 years at Emerald Downs.
