Ls Jacks Back has the right stuff to win Heritage Place Futurity
Ls Jacks Back is bred to be a top class Quarter Horse and on Saturday night he gets his first shot at Grade 1 glory in the $1.3 million Heritage Place Futurity at Remington Park.
The 350-yard feature is the richest race ever carded in Oklahoma. It will anchor a program of 12 races worth a track-record $2.7 million. There are nine stakes, including the Grade 1, $320,000 Debbie Schauf Remington Park Invitational led by Apollitical Pence, the winner of last year’s Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos. First post for Remington’s card is 5 p.m. Central.
Ls Jacks Back made his career debut during the first night of trials for the Heritage Place Futurity on May 7 at Remington and put up the fastest qualifying time when he powered through 350 yards in 17.86 seconds. Ls Jacks Back won by three lengths as the favorite under Francisco Calderon, who will be back aboard for the finale when the pair break from post 5.
Ls Jacks Back, who races for Jack Smith Farms, is an Oklahoma-bred son of top stallion Corona Cartel. Ls Jacks Back’s dam is Pj Chick in Black, who earned more than $650,000 while winning such races as the Grade 1 Ruidoso Futurity in 2012. John Stinebaugh trained Pj Chick in Black for the bulk of her career, and also is the trainer of Ls Jacks Back.
Ls Jacks Back faces nine others in the Heritage Place, including Political Rose. The filly was the fastest qualifier on the second night of trials May 8, when she covered 350 yards in 17.95 seconds. Political Rose won by 2 3/4 lengths while racing into a 20 mile-per-hour headwind. Ajs Tres of Paint was the second fastest qualifier on the second night of trials, winning his heat in 18.01 while racing into a 24 mile-per-hour headwind, noted publicity at Remington.
For the Schauf, millionaire Apollitical Pence returns to the classic distance of 440 yards. He won at the trip in the Champion of Champions last December. His chief rivals include champion Danjer, winner of the American Quarter Horse Association’s Challenge Championship last October at the Downs at Albuquerque. The field Saturday also includes Valiant Tiberias, a winner of two Grade 1 races in his last three starts, and Jess My Hocks, winner of the Grade 1 Leo on May 1 at Remington.
Instygator, who was second by a neck in last year’s $3 million All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs, brings the fastest qualifying time into the Grade 2, $361,010 Heritage Place Derby. He won his 400-yard trial for the race in 19.52 seconds May 9 at Remington.
◗ Apocalyptical Jess, the winner of the 2018 All American Futurity and an earner of $2.2 million, launches his season in the second race, an allowance over 400 yards.
