In Love, one of several entrants for Saturday’s $125,000 Dust Commander Stakes with a good amount of back class, showed an affinity for Turfway Park by winning the Prairie Bayou Stakes here Dec. 17. But Beatbox, one of his beaten foes that day, also loves this track and is the defending winner of this race. Their rematch is an intriguing component of the Saturday night feature. The Dust Commander, for older horses going 1 1/16 miles, is a prep toward the $300,000 Kentucky Cup Classic on Turfway’s marquee March 25 card. The older horse picture at the track is wide open following the retirement of Visitant, a multiple stakes winner at Turfway who this week arrived at Arroyo Vista Farm in California to begin his stud career. Beatbox won 3 of 4 starts, including the Dust Commander, at Turfway last season for trainer Bill Morey. His only loss came when he finished fifth in the Kentucky Cup Classic. He was away from the races for more than eight months following that effort, in the interim changing barns to trainer Cherie DeVaux. He finished seventh in the Prairie Bayou in his first start off the layoff, then bounced back to win an allowance/optional-claiming race on Jan. 27 at Turfway. He earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 94, matching his career best. In Love got back on track winning the Prairie Bayou for Paulo Lobo, splitting foes late to score by three-quarters of a length. It was his first victory since winning the Grade 1 Keeneland Turf Mile in the fall of 2021, and he now owns three stakes wins in the United States. In Love earned a 94 Beyer for his Turfway win. :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! Price Talk hasn’t missed the board in his seven most recent starts. Along the way, he has won stakes at Mountaineer and Remington Park before finishing third in the Prairie Bayou and then third in the Colonel E.R. Bradley at Fair Grounds against solid foes. He again looks competitive in this field, having posted Beyers of 93 and 94 in his two most recent outings. Mejthaam faces males after finishing third in the Likely Exchange against fillies and mares earlier this season at Turfway. The field also includes turf stakes winner Camp Hope, making his first start since May 2022; turf Grade 2 winner Fancy Liquor; Canadian classic-placed Harlan Estate; Ocean Atlantique, who was Group 3-placed in France as a 2-year-old; and Lincoln City. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
