Louisiana Downs track report

Mary Rampellini|Aug 08, 2002

A change in pace tactics could help Taylor's Queen turn the tables on Highhopesemilyluck, who has won her last four, in the $40,000 Dixie Miss Stakes at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, La.

The field for the six-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies is completed by Dancing Dreams, Cielo Girl, Ante Nettie, and Excavatress.

Taylor's Queen dueled through fast fractions last out in the $40,000 Fantasia on July 7, only to be overtaken in the late stages by Highhopesemilyluck, who put in a powerful stretch bid.

Taylor's Queen was a clear second, beaten a length in the six-furlong race, which went in a sharp 1:10.40.

"We got caught in a speed jam that we shouldn't have been in, between horses," said Cole Norman, who trains Taylor's Queen. "We're going to change our strategy up a little bit, and hopefully land in the winner's circle."

Norman would like to see Taylor's Queen sit just behind the leaders in the Dixie Miss. She used that strategy to win her 3-year-old debut June 20. Anthony Lovato has the call for owner Ella Chisom.

Ricky Faul will ride Highhopesemilyluck, who has put together an impressive string of victories since April for owner-breeder Jeannie Carrere and trainer Samuel Breaux.

Prior to taking the Fantasia, she won the $30,000 Tellike Handicap over older rivals at Evangeline Downs on June 1, an entry-level allowance May 9, and a maiden race April 18. Her career record stands at 4 wins from 5 starts, with her lone career defeat coming in her debut March 16.

Highhopesemilyluck, who seems to be improving with each race, is a strong closer who should have an honest pace to chase thanks to the presence of front-runners Dancing Dreams, Ante Nettie, and Excavatress.
